The Dante Fascell Visitor Center is located on the open waters of Biscayne Bay, nine miles east of Homestead and part of the greater Miami area. The climate is sub-tropical with mild, dry winters (70 degrees on average) and hot, wet and humid summers (85 degrees on average).
Intern must be bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish. Primary duties include; staffing the Dante Fascell Visitor Center and Museum desk (75%), roving and conducting informal interpretation on the visitor center grounds and at local marinas (10%), researching, preparing and presenting interpretive tours (boat and walking tours, snorkel trips and orientations, canoe trips, porch talks and/or evening programs) (10%), and assisting co-workers with outreach and special events (5%). Visitor center desk duties include; greeting visitors, providing information about park programs, facilities and regulations, orienting visitors to the South Florida area, responding (in person, in writing and by phone) to public questions and concerns, operating audio visual orientation programs, assisting visitors with the completion of junior ranger booklets, operating a cash register, opening and closing the visitor center, and conducting sales of books, videos and other items.This position is not eligible for the AmeriCorp award.
