This position is based out of the small Western Pennsylvania town of Marienville. Located half way between Erie and Pittsburgh, Marienville sits at the southern gateway into the Allegheny National Forest. The ANF is a small national forest, at 550,000 acres, with many small communities situated throughout. There are an abundance of outdoor activities to pursue including hiking, paddling, biking, fishing, and more. Work will be done on the North Country Trail, the longest long-distance hiking trail in the US. There are 100 miles of the NCT that pass through the forest and work will be done throughout.
You will perform general trails maintenance and project work, working with the Lead Trails intern as an intern Trail Crew, in conjunction with other SCA crews, or independently. This position will work alongside 4 other trails interns as well as a crew leader. Work will be on the North County Trail, the longest National Scenic Trail in the United States. The NCT passes through the Allegheny National Forest for 100 miles. Trail work includes but is not limited to: Corridor clearing (including chainsaw use), stone work (steps, retaining structures, drainage), timber work, and tread work. There will be a formal training period where general trail work skills are taught and then skills will be honed throughout the internship. More advanced trainings such as basic rigging skills for simple applications will also be taught, as well as a forest service chainsaw course.
