Hiring Summer Crew Leaders for Detroit Conservation Leadership Corps [Job Posting]

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire high school students with the 2013 Detroit Conservation Leadership Corps summer program, a partnership with the Greening of Detroit with major underwriting from Johnson Controls, Inc. You can make a difference this summer by being a part of a program that promotes youth leadershipdevelopment, environmental stewardship and exposure to Green career opportunities in Detroit.

Co-lead, mentor and coach a crew of 10 students, ages 15-18, while completing various conservation service projects designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship.  Projects include a range of activities such as trail and park maintenance, habitat restoration, vacant lot reclamation projects and urban agriculture.  In addition, leaders will facilitate pre- and post- program planning which includes crew training, environmental education and reporting.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Follow all SCA policies & procedures as required for the position
• Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
• Manage relationship with agency partner
• Facilitate crew operations: tools & equipment, work schedule, etc.
• Manage all medical and first aid aspects
• Communicate with full time SCA Detroit Program Manager as required
• Supervise crew members during the work day, mitigating challenges to group dynamic and building supportive and empowering community amongst crew members
• Train & supervise Crew Members in safe and proper tool use and risk management
• Assist in organization and facilitation of recreation trip after completion of work project
• Complete required program reporting and documentation
• Inspire crew members to take ownership over green spaces in their community and learn about environmental assets and challenges in Detroit and the greater region. 

Qualifications:

• Be at least 21 years old
• Must have ability to legally work in the US
• Valid driver’s license and successful completion of criminal background check & MVR check within SCA guidelines
• Must possess current First Aid certification & CPR by the start of orientation training.
• Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18)
• Experience as a teacher or leader in an informal or formal educational environment
• Preferred experience with conservation work skills, environmental education or related skills, i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening.
• Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more.
• Have familiarity with and passion for the Detroit community.

Compensation: Up to $575/week, depending on experience, for six or seven week program.  Work schedule is approximately 8hrs/day, M-F, 7:30am – 3:30pm. Includes mandatory, all expense paid residential training in June (dates TBD) and local trainings, workshops and service projects leading up to program dates. Program dates are tentatively set for end of June through mid August 2013.
