"I would not give back the nine months I spent in the Yuha, mostly because I would not deprive this world of 13 remarkable souls spreading the secrets of the desert." Lillian Bloch, Yuha Desert Restoration Corps, May '05

Help tell SCA's story. Share the stories and pictures from your SCA experience. And, read about the trips of other alumni. Maybe you'll see pictures from your site. Or maybe you'll see a story written by one of your crew members. Or maybe you’ll even see an internship or a crew project you want to participate in.
Tell your story in 150 words or less. Be sure to include the name of your site and state. Send it to Mary Margaret Sloan, Alumni Director.
You can learn more about others' experiences volunteering for SCA by browsing through the following stories. You can also search the entire site by using the keyword search function on the top right of this and every page.

By Lindsay Warren, SCA Alumna
Growing up with parents involved in the Student Conservation Association encouraged me to care for my community. It also urged me to motivate others to come to appreciate their own communities, which include so much more than people. So, it may be surprising to learn that, at first, I didn’t think SCA was for me. |

Looking at the mountains surrounding the Tucson Valley, I realized that I had no recollection of what they looked like. While I had once possessed an intimate knowledge of many of the slot canyons and ridgelines, the mountains had become foreign peaks. I better understood the words my grandmother had said when she picked me up from the airport earlier in the week.

My internship on Catalina Island has been pretty amazing so far. I spend most of my days surveying the island for breeding bald eagle pairs and pretty soon we will be replacing the eggs with dummy eggs so we can bring them to the incubators here in the apartment that I am living in. It is pretty exciting. I spend a lot of time perched up on cliffs looking out over the nests so I have been able to see some great wildlife from that vantage point. So far I have seen common dolphins, grey whales, california sea lions, american kestrels, bison, the endemic island fox and of course, bald eagles!

It's only been three months since I started working here at the South Florida and Caribbean Network Office for the National Park Service, but I feel like my entire life has changed. This is such a unique and amazing SCA opportunity in so many ways. I work in an office most of the time, as opposed to many of the SCA field internships, and I work and live in Miami. This is not an isolated field station. But I feel like I actually play an important role in Natural Resource Management for NPS. |

I was crying when I got on the plane. Yes, of course I wanted to go have great experiences, meet awesome people, and give something back to the community and to the Earth, but I never realized how hard it would be to actually leave. |
