The seeds will be pressed for oil to create clean-burning biofuels. This Pittsburgh Green Cities initiatives is generously funded by GTECH. It rained, but "we had a good ol' muddy time!" reported SCA's Yahaira Lopez.
SCA teamed up with the National Park Service, the National Environmental Education Foundation, and Toyota to offer some hands-on stewardship to one of DC’s nearby national parks. This one-day event, organized jointly with SCA's Alumni Council, included individuals and groups to join in an effort to work on volunteer projects within Prince William Forest Park in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the New Deal program and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The 2008 event focused on restoring original CCC projects throughout the park. Projects included cabin repair, trail restoration, tree planting, mulching and more. We had 16 participants who contributed a combined 80 hours of service.

Who knew that pulling grass could be so much fun!
SCA alumni and friends joined the National Park Service, volunteers from across South Carolina, and Friends of Congaree to get down and dirty for the highly anticipated National Public Lands Day. Organized by SCA's Alumni Council, the group of 40 volunteers set out to remove invasive Japanese Bamboo Grass from the park and removing litter from around the entrance and along the park boundaries. Prior to lunch, the group gathered close to 20 bags of the invasive species and learned a lot more about the area as well. Concluding the day, 15 bags of litter were properly disposed of and the group set out to explore the floodplain in more depth. We had 40 participants who put in 120 hours worth of service.
