The Payette National Forest offers an incredible range of winter recreation activities including snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing. The McCall area alone claims 500 miles of groomed snowmobile routes, with 291 miles authorized on-forest under a 2013 Environmental Assessment. The Payette National Forest encompasses an area of 2.3 million acres of which nearly 1.5 million acres is open to motorized and non-motorized winter recreation. In addition the Payette also has over 19,000 acres of guided backcountry skiing and 16 miles of groomed cross country ski trails on the forest. How these sites and features are maintained is a reflection on the Forest, as well as the local community that depends on recreation activities that contribute to the economy.
