Opportunity:  Student Conservation Association is seeking a Risk Management Intern at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Georgia, for the summer of 2014
Background:  Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) is Atlanta’s primary water recreation destination with over 3.2 million annual visitors.  Visitors enter the park through marked and unmarked boundaries, with many of them unaware they are in a National Park.  Most hail from Atlanta’s diverse communities where Spanish and other languages are spoken at home in many households.  Many visitors come to party in the river and can be dangerously inexperienced, threatening public safety and park resources.
Internship Goals and Objectives:  NPS is committed to reducing water related rescues, injuries, deaths and resource damage in CRNRA.  The Public Risk Management Program seeks a Risk Management Intern to plan and conduct a water safety education and outreach program for CRNRA.
Project Tasks:  With support and guidance from park staff and the Public Risk Management Program (PRMP) staff at WASO, the intern will participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary safety committee which will:

-Gather water related incident data from 16 partner agencies along the 48-mile boundary of the park;
-Organize and enter data utilizing Arc GIS 10 series, MS Excel spreadsheets with graphical displays, and MS Access;
-Conduct basic quality analysis and quality control of data, compose summary reports and display data spatially using Arc GIS to create basic map products;
-Communicate the findings to technical and non-technical park staff and partners;

In order to gain an understanding of water safety concerns in CRNRA, the intern will:

-Complete CRNRA’s Safety training;
-Ride-along on law enforcement river patrols;
-Float the Chattahoochee River in canoes, kayaks or rafts;
-Interview staff from partner agencies and various park divisions.
Qualifications:  Intern should be active in their local community and fluent in English and Spanish.  The selected candidate must have boating experience and be comfortable around water in a river environment.  Intern must have excellent communication skills to craft and deliver effective messages for different audiences.  Intern must be able to respectfully communicate with people who express diverse points of view, and must have excellent analytical skills, be highly organized, and be able to take initiative and work independently.  Intern should be skilled at synthesizing data and information into a well-written document using ESRI Arc GIS 10 series, MS Excel, MS Access.  Intern should have both a basic understanding of and great interest in injury epidemiology and water safety.  Intern should possess a bachelor’s degree and be pursuing a master’s degree in a related field.  Intern must have their own vehicle to use during working hours.
Internship Dates:  June 1 – August 23, 2014. Intern will play a significant role in two signature public educational events on June 14 and July 26. 
Compensation: Intern will receive a weekly living allowance of $100.00 a week, over 12 weeks. Vehicle work mileage will be reimbursed.  NPS housing will be provided in CRNRA.
