Intern will work with a professional biologist on a range of natural resource projects with an emphasis on wildlife (bats, sage grouse, and pronghorn) and native plant restoration. The position conducts weekly air quality monitoring, records weather readings, updates a variety of databases, and explores caves in the middle of winter to document hibernating bats.
 
Restoration projects include replanting of native vegetation in disturbed sites, watering transplants and seedlings,  mechanical and chemical control of noxious weeds and repair or modification of fences to protect wildlife.
 
The incumbent must be willing and comfortable working outdoors in a variety of extreme weather conditions. As well as traveling on foot over long distances on rugged volcanic terrain or snow carrying backpacks weighing up to 40 lbs., exploring caves, and being able to accurately record data according to prescribed protocols.  The position requires a basic understanding of standard office software and a working knowledge of ArcGIS is very helpful.
 



Craters of the Moon Wilderness Area

  • The monument and preserve extend across Idaho’s Snake River Plain from the Pioneer Mountains on the north to almost the Snake River on the south. Elevations range from 7,700 feet to 4,400 feet above sea level (Monument headquarters - 5,900 feet). The NPS monument and preserve encompass 465,000 acres of the Great Rift and associated volcanic features of extensive lava flows, cinder cones, lava tubes and kipukas. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve headquarters is located 18 miles west of Arco, Idaho. Arco (population 1,000) has one grocery store, post office, a hospital and medical clinic, dental clinic, and several banks. The nearest communities with additional services are Idaho Falls (80 miles) to the east and the Hailey/Sun Valley area to the west (60 miles).

  • In addition to the hiking, skiing and biking opportunities within the Monument, there are millions of acres of National Forests and other public lands within a one hour drive. Sun Valley, a year round resort, is less than 2 hours drive.
