This exciting and dynamic position will be working within the natural resources field at New Melones Lake.  The successful candidate will gain training, experience and knowledge pertaining to park and natural resources management.  This volunteer position is developmental in nature; the candidate will be mentored and guided by Park Rangers and Natural Resource Specialists.  The position will involve work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures.  Some visitor center and office work will also be required.

This position will primarily perform work as a part of the park’s invasive and quagga mussel prevention program.  Due to the work involving extensive public contact, the volunteer must be professional in conduct and appearance as well as personable and helpful.  The volunteer will strive to ensure that the park’s quagga mussel prevention policies are followed by boaters.  This will entail handing out boat self-inspection forms, reviewing and assisting visitors with completing the form and ensuring that boaters are complying self inspection form guidelines.

The volunteer will provide quagga mussel training and education to boaters as required.  Additional duties such as desiging and staffing a quagga mussel booth will be required.

  • The candidate will have access to training that will potentially include water safety training, first aid and safety briefings.
  • The volunteer will have complete access to all of the park’s recreational opportunities. This includes camping, hiking, biking, fishing and boating. Educational opportunities include attending training currently available to park staff.
