Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge
The forestry tech intern at Carolina Sandhills NWR will collect data that will be used to manage endangered species habitat. As a forestry tech intern you will collect forest stand data to be used in conducting habitat improvement projects on the 46,000-acre refuge; mark and tally timber; mark stand boundaries, log decks and skid trails; conduct timber cruises; record field data appropriately and accurately; use support tools such as GPS/GIS and timber cruising software. Located in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, the refuge was established in 1939 to restore and maintain the longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem. On the refuge, rolling beds of sandy soils, extensive longleaf pine forest, thirty man-made lakes, and numerous small creeks and tributaries serve as habitat to support more than 190 species of birds, 42 species of mammals, 41 species of reptiles, 25 species of amphibians, and over 750 plant species. The refuge uses various management techniques, including prescribed burning, to maintain this ecosystem, and also supports the largest population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker on US Fish and Wildlife Service lands.
