San Antonio Missions National Historic Park
Position ID
This position assists park staff with tasks associated with general site preparations, historic irrigation ditch maintenance, vegetation removal, and cleaning of approximately 70 acres of park cultural landscapes in preparation and implementation of demonstration farming on park lands historically associated with Spanish colonial acequias and mission agriculture.
Cultural resources within the scope will include, farm fields, historic irrigation canals, and associated hardened trails.  Additionally, the SCA Intern will assist the park with the preparations, and general support related to the operation of agricultural properties including a park demonstration plot associated with the Spanish colonial history of the park.
The ability to irrigate farmlands and bringing/maintaining water to the mission communities was imperative to the success of the Spanish colonial missions.  San Antonio Missions National Historical Park was created to preserve, protect, and provide educational opportunities related to the 1700’s era mission resources including the irrigation systems (acequias) that supported them.  Preservation of these acequia systems and cultural landscapes is vital for their cultural value and for providing visitors with a more complete picture of mission life.
This project will engage a local intern to assist the park with preparing and managing newly developed areas of park cultural landscapes associated with Spanish colonial occupation.  Resources within the scope will include, farm fields, historic irrigation canals, and associated hardened trails.
