Step into the past at Fort Union Trading Post, the historic “shopping center” where American Indians from at least nine Plains tribes traded food stuffs, buffalo robes, and other furs for fabrics, manufactured and metal items, beads, and goods imported from Europe and Asia. You will experience hands-on and formal training in object identification, documentation, and the care of archeological collections and archives. Learn and practice the art of public interpretation, as you research and create temporary exhibits or audiovisual presentations about the National Park Service Centennial, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site’s 50th anniversary, and the artifacts you will come to know. Interns must demonstrate written communiction and computer skills (e.g., word processing and video editing software) as well as knowledge of American history, archeology, or anthropology. Courses in American history, Native American cultures, or archeology are desirable. Additional requirements include demonstrated creativity, attention to detail, self-motivation, and flexibility.

  • Situated along the Missouri River, the park straddles the Montana/North Dakota state line. At an elevation of 1,900 feet, the park includes mixed-grass prairie and river bottoms. At less than 25 miles form the park, Williston, ND and Sidney, MT are the closest towns with shopping and medical care. Weather is typical of the northern plains, with normal winter temperatures below 32 degrees F and summer temperatures ranging between the 80s to 100 degrees F.
  • Basic artifact handling and documentation; stabilization of archaeological specimens; online courses in care of archaeological collections and fundamentals of interpretation.
  • Indoor and outdoor recreation is available in Williston, ND and Sidney, MT. Williston has a state-of-the-art recreation and fitness center. Numerous state and national parks are within three hours driving time, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
