For Parents

Led by experienced crew leaders, crew members learn to practice healthy and responsible community living by working daily to serve the environment. Challenging work, play, and living conditions can provide great material for college, university, scholarship and job applications. Tests of leadership, work ethic, moral values and the motivation to serve are experienced daily. And, they have a great time.

Crew at Work

Safety

SCA is committed to providing a safe crew experience for high school students from across the country. In fact, SCA's risk management practices are exemplary and serve as a model for other experiential education programs. At SCA, we take safety very seriously.

Getting Ready

You can help your student get ready for an SCA Conservation Crew experience. Speak with them openly about...

  • Taking responsibility for being away from home for an extended period of time.
  • Commiting to SCA conduct standards*.
  • Hard physical work & their motivation to become an SCA volunteer.
  • What to pack. Read the Gear list and make certain your child arrives prepared.

Encourage them to...

  • Take a hike or walk with 20-30 lbs in their backpacks.
  • Break in their new boots!
  • Practice drinking lots of water
  • Read about conservation, volunteerism & our National Parks.

*Violating SCA’s conduct standards is grounds for dismissal. Some of the conduct standards include abstaining from sexual activity, illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco while on the Crew.
