Field Leader Program Types

National Crew Leaders

Lead, motivate, inspire and guide High School Conservation crews in more than 100 spectacular national parks, forests and refuges across the US.  SCA offers qualified applicants the opportunity to guide volunteer crews during the summer in the backcountry or frontcountry while supporting land management agencies such as, the National Park Service and the USDA Forest Service.

Your SCA crew may:

  • Construct and maintain trails through parks and forests
  • Build bridges and shelters
  • Repair walls and stone steps
  • Improve and conserve wildlife habitats

To be a Leader, you must have a strong interest and experience teaching and/or working with youth,  be able to maintain a  positive work environment and have relevant outdoor experience (living and/or working). Positions are available throughout the United States.

Community Crew Leaders

Lead, mentor and coach crews of high school students, ages 15-18, during the Summer. Crew Leaders will train and supervise teams of students through the completion of much needed conservation service projects in cities and community parks. Leaders will plan weekly field trips designed to build community understanding and environmental stewardship with participants.

A Community Crew Leader should have experience teaching or working with urban youth, be able to maintain a  positive work environment and have relevant outdoor experience (living and/or working). Community Program positions available in: Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Houston, Dallas, Stamford, Detroit, Newark, Oakland, Clinton, NJ, Milwaukee, & Baltimore.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
  • Obtain current, required certification by the start date of the Crew Leader Training
    1. Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or equivalent certification; required for solo and backcountry Crew Leaders
    2. Wilderness First Aid (WFA); required for CLC Leaders and National Crew Leaders working with a WFR certified co-leader (We offer a WFA course two days prior to the Crew Leader Training)
    3. Basic First Aid; required for Commuting Crew Leaders
  • Ability to perform manual labor for up to 8 hours per day, occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more and hike 5 or more miles
  • Must be willing to attend Crew Leader Orientation Training, 3-4 days in Spring. New Crew Leaders must also attend the Work Skills Training, 5-6 days in Spring. Travel to and from Training is paid for by SCA

Project Leaders

Partner liaison, educator, environmentally driven.  These qualities, and more, embody our best and brightest Conservation Corps Project Leaders. Project Leaders play a vital role in developing the work plan's with SCA and their partner agencies.

Projects may include:

  • Environmental outreach & education
  • Invasive plan removal/native plant propagation
  • Trail construction
  • Wildfire education/mitigation or monitoring
  • Wilderness restoration
  • Natural resource management
