SCA member learns about life "on top" at Mount Rainier |
Julia Sievert, Mount Rainier Ambassador, Conservation Leadership Corps member
I once believed that humans were meant to be "on top." "On top" of the food chain, "on top" of the intellectual pyramid, "on top" of evolution. I thought humans were the most evolved, most supreme living beings and that they were the most important part of this world; my world.
But recently I have discovered otherwise.

Mountain Dust in the Pasta |
Laura Bogar, Mount Rainier Ambassador, Conservation Leadership Corps member
The mountain never really leaves you.
I’m three days back from a fifteen-day stint on Mt. Rainier, and the dirt is still working its way out of my pores. But I treasure it. Though showers are nice, nothing compares with the joy of being on a crew. Getting really intimate with the land turns a little dust in the pasta from a mistake into a seasoning. Bug bites become battle scars. And acquaintances turn into friendships stronger than the rock bars they’re forged with.

One Ambassador's Journey to Mount Rainier |
Laura Bogar, 17, is spending her summer spreading her passion for Mount Rainier and hands-on service to the land as a part of the Student Conservation Association’s Mount Rainier Ambassador program. A senior at Seattle’s Garfield High School, she is currently serving as a volunteer on a 15-day trail crew based in the Ohanapecosh area of the park along with a team of other Seattle high school students. In her leadership role as an ambassador, Bogar is helping her crew leaders supervise the technical aspects of the trailwork during the day and, back at camp, she records the experiences and inspirations of her 8 other crew mates. Upon returning to Seattle, Bogar and two other ambassadors, Jaya Ghosh and Julia Sievert, will create a multi-media presentation to share with community groups in Seattle. Their work will showcase the damage at Rainier and the restoration efforts of local Seattle youth.

SCA's Mount Rainier Recovery Program |
Over an unseasonably warm two-day period in November of 2006, some areas of the northwest forest received as much as 18 inches of rainfall. In Mount Rainier National Park, cascades of rain and melted water from snow and glaciers produced unprecedented damage. SCA is proud to be leading the Mount Rainier Recovery Initiative, a coalition of organizations, groups, and individuals committed to the restoration of this icon of the northwest. Learn more about this exciting program.
