River Interpretation Intern

Valentine, a town of 2,800, is located in north central Nebraska at the edge of the Sandhills region. The area is rural, remote, and agricultural in character. Valentine provides grocery, medical, and dental services. The nearest larger town is North Platte, NE 2.5 hours south.

Uses primary and secondary sources to research, creativity to develop, and communication skills to present orientation, information, and informal interpretation of Niobrara NSR natural resources to river visitors (50%).  Interpretive duties are carried out at NSR headquarters contact station, at partner sites along the NSR, in local communities, and on the river by canoe or kayak.  Must be able to safely and independently operate a solo canoe or kayak on rivers rated Class I - III on the International Scale of Difficulty.  Assists park rangers in providing visitor and community outreach interpretive programs and children's programs as assigned (25%). Uses personal computers, digital still and video cameras, and digital audio recording devices to gather digital media for park.  Manages, catalogues, and edits park digital media files.  Assists permanent staff in the creation of web-based and traditional interpretive media for public education (25%).
