Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska and centrally located. It has access to wild lands in every direction. Denali National Park is 120 miles south while the Brooks Range is 270 miles north of Fairbanks. The area of emphasis for this position is the Steese National Conservation Area, which includes the Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail, and Birch Creek National Wild River. This 1.2 million acre area was set aside to protect water quality and caribou habitat.
You will assist in the implementation of the recreation program in the Steese National Conservation Area, Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail and Birch Creek National Wild River within the Eastern Interior Field Office. You may also assist with recreation projects in the White Mountains National Recreation Area, on Beaver Creek National Wild River, or the Fortymile National Wild and Scenic River, and Fort Egbert National Historic Site. In addition, you will assist with route inventories and condition assessments, provide general maintenance to the recreation facilities, and provide routine information and interpretation to the visiting public.For housing, you should be prepared for field camps using small backpacking style tents (provided) as the primary field accommodation; however, a field station including housing, kitchen/office and sanitation facilities are available in the Central area. Additional housing will be at the Alaska Fire Service Barracks, located on a military post. You will have a single room with twin bed, shared bath with next room, and laundry facilities. No cooking facilities on site or refrigerator. Grocery facilities and shopping located off post and are over five miles from the barracks. There is no public transportation available on post.
