Range Technician

This position is located in the Sawtooth National Forest. Responsibilities include: providing technical support to the rangeland management program(s); learning to identify range plants and soil types common to the local area and perform long term condition-trend monitoring; assist in range analysis duties by driving stakes, stretching tapes, and recording plants that are identified by a higher grade employee; report cases of unauthorized livestock use to supervisor. Knowledge Required: knowledge of basic, commonly-used rules, and procedures of range work; knowledge of basic range management practices and procedures to perform assignments. Physical Demands: the work requires regular and recurring physical exertion related to conservation work requiring walking on rough terrain, climbing steep banks, and jumping ditches and furrows. The duration of the activity contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks and discomfort such as dust, smoke, irritant chemicals, and cold weather. Specific safety precautions are required.The supervisor will create continuing assignments by initially indicating, verbally or through written work orders, such criteria as the amount of work expected, general explanation of what is to be done, advice on the location of reference material or work samples, and the nature of the limits applicable to the assignments. Complex assignments consist of performing a full variety of the standardized technical support and technical duties associated with the work. You will work in collaboration with personnel within the immediate work unit(s), project, or organization or with members of the public in very structured or controlled situations.
