Desert Restoration
This corps consists of seven separate teams based near several field offices of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), California Desert District in southern California. Each team has a Project Leader plus six-eight members and serves for a total of eight months. Service is primarily focused on the restoration of damage caused by off-highway vehicles (OHV) in limited use and closed areas under management by the BLM. The emphasis is to protect the habitat of several endangered species, including the desert tortoise, as well as to ensure the viability of the OHV trail system. The teams camp at the project sites for up to nine days at a time and use a variety of techniques, including vertical mulching and re-texturing the ground surface to restore the habitat. They also rehabilitate degraded trails to prevent erosion and spend substantial time in education and community outreach efforts with user and school groups.
