We arrived in Seattle on the 22nd. Everyone has their WFA certification so we're off to the Girl Scout Camp tomorrow.

May 22: Members arrive in Seattle and travel to Camp Don Bosco
May 23 - 25: Orientation
May 26 - 27: Wilderness First Aid
May 28: Travel day from Camp Don Bosco to River Ranch camp
May 29 - June 2: Work skills
June 3: Leave camp for an awesome road trip to Santa Fe National Forest!
June 5: National Trails Day - go love your favorite trail!
June 8: Arrive in Santa Fe and hike into the Winsor Trail campsite
June 9 - 21: First hitch, on the Winsor Trail, Pecos District, with Santa Fe Crew 1. Work will include three bridges; two sets of rock steps; installation of a sign post; out with the old wood water bars and in with the new rock ones; and re-establishing tread by armoring, insloping and outsloping.
June 22 - July 5: Second hitch, on the Water Canyon, Mitchell, and Valle Canyon Trails, Española District. Work will include a four-step re-route, tread work, and a bit of brushing.

About the Site [30]
The Santa Fe National Forest Crew #2 will be working throughout the Forest, completing a variety of trail maintenance projects. The work is expected to include a couple of hitches in wilderness areas, improvements to a motorcycle trail, some cross-cut sawing, and a whole lot of fun.
The crew is comprised of four members and a project leader, and will be working in Santa Fe for fifteen weeks. Members receive training in trail work skills and Wilderness First Aid before heading to Santa Fe. Members will also receive training in Leave No Trace and learn more about the Southwest.
Much of the Forest is dry, though not quite a desert, and mountainous, with vegetation varying with elevation and direction (slopes facing west tend to be wetter than slopes facing east, slopes facing south get more sun than those facing north). I got my start in the great outdoors as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica, where I worked in two public botanical gardens, organized the first Earth Day events ever held in my village, and did research into and advocacy for Jamaica's caves. After Peace Corps, I earned a Masters degree in parks and recreation, spending my summers during grad school working as a high school crew leader for SCA in Georgia, California and Idaho. After graduating, I puttered about, then ended up in SCA again, as a member in a trail crew in Florida. More puttering, and now I am the project leader for the Santa Fe Crew 2 this summer.
I am originally from Maryland, near Washington, DC. But I did my undergraduate in Ohio (majors in Chinese and French), then back to Maryland for a year, then Peace Corps in Jamaica, then grad school in Illinois, then Florida and now New Mexico. So I'm not quite sure where I'm from anymore. I have also been living out of my car since June 2009.
When not working for the SCA, I am often underground in a cave, or paddling, or camping, or sometimes backpacking or climbing. I also enjoy reading whatever junk novels I can find at the local library sale.
