FIELD WORK: The participant will be trained to collect samples of mine waste and other environmental media for chemical analysis. The participant will then be expected to collect samples independently and/or with staff. Access to mine sites is often limited to 4-wheel drive roads and/or strenuous hiking. Soil Disturbance Classification Data Collection: The participant will be trained to implement a soil disturbance classification protocol to determine soil disturbance within recently treated vegetation management units. Stream Channel and Fisheries Habitat Data Collection: The participant may have the opportunity to work with the ARNF Hydrology/Fisheries Crew to implement a variety of standard stream channel inventory and fisheries protocols. Road Condition and Watershed improvement Needs Inventory: The participant will have the opportunity to work with the District Engineer to review road conditions and identify road improvement needs. Watershed Restoration Projects: The participant will have the opportunity to work on watershed restoration projects. These projects typically involve de-compaction, re-contouring, re-vegetation, erosion control and fence building. HISTORICAL RESEARCH: The participant will be expected to locate and collect historical information regarding the operation and ownership of mines and mills located on the National Forest. Information will be collected from various sources including the Internet, university and local libraries, County Assessors, and Colorado State Archives. TECHNICAL WRITING: Prior to initiating field work, the participant will write or assist with writing of a Sampling and Analysis Plan. Sample information will be recorded on data sheets and field notes will be taken during sampling events. Will be expected to summarize field and chemistry data into Data Reports and historical information will be incorporated into Preliminary Assessments/Site Investigation documents. GIS AND DATA ENTRY: The participant will have the opportunity to develop and/or utilize GIS skills. The participant will summarize, organize and file field data as needed.
