BioBlitz is a two-day event where volunteer scientists, naturalists, families, and students work together to discover and celebrate biodiversity in Barataria Preserve, one of six units of Jean Lafitte NHP&P. This is the seventh of ten annual BioBlitzes that the National Geographic Society and the National Park Service are organizing at national parks around the country leading up to the Park Service centennial in 2016. The three hubs of this BioBlitz are Field Inventories, the Biodiversity Festival, and Environmental Education Opportunities. The two day event will feature a wide variety of science, nature, conservation, and biodiversity experiences in the field, plus live music, art, talks, and nature/science themed activities at the festival. The public can interact with scientists, watch them in action, and learn about the latest techniques to study all sorts of living creatures. The Bioblitz Intern will assist National Park Service staff with the planning and execution of all Bioblitz activities. The intern will work day-to-day with National Park Service staff, but will also have an opportunity to interface with the National Geographic Society staff.
