Environmental Educator

This position will be located with the Environmental Management Bureau of OPRHP in Albany, NY. The delivery of EEandI in OPRHP is through each of the agency’s 11 regional offices. The member will become familiar with the working of EEandI on a regional basis as well as develop an understanding of what is working well and where limitations exist in the EEandI program delivery. The position will entail the convening of a meeting of OPRHP environmental educators for brainstorming of EEandI specific needs, gaining an understanding of the Commissioner’s direction and initiatives and identifying alternative approaches and resources required to address those needs.

The primary focus of this position will be on advancing initiatives of executive staff designed to enhance EEandI in State Parks. While this effort will be statewide, it will primarily draw from the knowledge and experience in EE&I of the 4 park regions in the Hudson Valley. The position entails significant outreach not only to educators in the agency but also those within our many partners who are assisting on our mission of advancing environmental education. One of those key partners is the SCA itself.   Many of the SCA members in the Hudson Valley program serve as Environmental Educators for a diversity of agencies and interests groups.   These fellow members of the Hudson Valley program can provide tangible examples of effective advancement of EEandI that can be taken into consideration in the member’s work on behalf of state parks.
1.        Revise and disseminate vision statement for EEandI within the State Park system. (15%)
2.        Convene of meetings / GoTo conference calls of environmental educators in OPRHP. (5%)
3.        Conduct statewide surveys of Environmental Educators in OPRHP as directed by executive staff.(15%)
4.        Conduct analysis of alternative approaches to EEandI within the agency. Apply SWOT analysis in identifying approaches. (5%)
5.        Participate in meetings of EMB staff where agenda items relate to EE&I and provide updates on his or her work. (5%)
6.        As necessary, consult with leading EEandI program staff in other agencies and interested groups. (5%)
7.        Participate in the development and running of EEandI program in a nearby state park region. (15%)
8.        Travel to state parks as necessary to obtain first hand appreciation of EEandI approaches in state park regions. Travel will be coordinated with EMB staff travel where possible and also have a focus on parks and sites in the Hudson Valley. (15%)
9.        Conduct research on innovative and also time tested effective approaches to EEandI. (5%)
10.     Enhance and develop website content for EEandI. (15%)
11.     Participate in all SCA/AmeriCorps training programs and Hudson Valley service projects (15%)

Required Skills:

- Bachelor degree or higher in natural resource management, biology, environmental education, or other related discipline. - Course work and/or experience in the delivery of Environmental Education programming. - Experience working with people/groups
