Location: Washington, DC Office
Date(s) Offered: As soon as possible; could be part-time until summer, then 40 hours/week through August.
Our Climate & Energy Program seeks a Media Intern to help educate the public on climate change science [2] through the media [3].
Responsibilities:
The Media Intern will be responsible for identifying mainstream media articles on climate science and flagging them for potential response from UCS staff members and independent scientists.
In addition to his/her basic responsibilities, the Media Intern will assist with outreach to scientists, drafting explanation of climate science for use by staff and scientists, and proactive outreach to journalists.
Qualifications and experience:
Candidates should be adept at combing through large amounts of news content, particularly through Google News, Lexis Nexis and other databases. Candidates should have professional email writing skills. Candidates should be familiar with various media outlets, ranging from comment sections on newspaper Web sites and social media to blogs, mainstream newspapers, and television news departments.
Robust written and oral communications abilities and a strong layperson’s understanding of the scientific method and climate science in particular are preferred. Candidates should possess a passion for educating the public on scientific topics and a demonstrable commitment to working in the public interest/non-profit sector. A minimum of one year’s experience in an academic, non-profit or other setting executing public relations campaigns or using media as part of an advocacy campaign is preferred.
Hours and pay: minimum 16 hours/week until summer, then 40 hours/week; monthly pay of $2,080 with a BA/BS, based on 40 hours/week.
