Maritime Educator Intern, Living Classrooms - Washington, DC - Deadline 12/14

Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region is a non-profit organization, operated for the benefit of the community at large, providing hands-on experiential education, staff development and job training, with a special emphasis on at-risk youth and groups from diverse backgrounds.

LC-NCR is seeking one maritime educator intern for the historic buy boat, M/V Half Shell.  Educators will teach hands-on science to youth 3rd through 12th grade in the DC metropolitan area during day and overnight trips on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers.  Educators will also serve as crew of the boat, maintaining the safety of all students and assisting in small maintenance projects.  Our spring trip season starts March 15th.  Prior to that, the intern will assist in preparing lessons and materials for the season.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

• assist in development, planning, and implementation of educational programming
• teach shipboard programs, including day and overnight camping trips
• assist with safe operation of the educational vessel
• help provide a fun work environment as well as a fun learning environment for students

Successful candidates must be enthusiastic educators and willing to get their hands wet/dirty on a daily basis.  Previous work experience with kids or boats is a big plus.  This is a spring semester internship starting mid-January.  End date is negotiable but would prefer applicants who can work through most of May.  Preferred applicants will be able to work at least 30 hours a week.

Living Classrooms will provide a small, daily stipend to offset the cost of transportation to and from work.  Lunch will also be provided on days the Half Shell has educational trips.  Living Classrooms will also work with schools to gain course credit.
