U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Data Management Internship, San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, Newark, CA
One data management intern is needed to assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) with data collection and database management from June through September 2011, with possible extension through December. The intern will work primarily at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Newark, California, but may travel to other refuges within FWS Region 8 (California, Nevada and the Klamath Basin in Oregon).
Responsibilities will include: (1) Online research and collection of data related to refuge hydrology, climate, geology and biota for hydrogeomorphic analyses (HGMs); (2) Data entry of HGM and other legacy and monitoring data (e.g., species occurrences, monitoring programs, etc.); (3) Database testing and evaluation; and (4) Coordination with HGM contractors. Some opportunities for field work, potentially including endangered plant and animal surveys (birds, amphibians, butterflies, mice, flowers and invertebrates), endangered and native plant seed collection, non-native vegetation mapping and removal, avian predator surveys, vernal/seasonal pool sampling, nest success monitoring and GPS. Occasional early morning/late evening/weekend work.
Required: Bachelor’s degree or near completion; general knowledge of web searching and Excel/Access databases; attention to detail and ability to accurately enter data; time management and organizational skills; basic computer experience including Office 2007.
Bonus experience: Background in informatics, hydrology, geomorphology, database management or statistical analysis; valid driver’s license; comfortable driving long hours in traffic; wildlife observation and basic plant identification skills; patience looking through spotting scopes for long periods of time; physical ability to use varied equipment, vehicles, and tools to complete field work; ability to work in harsh weather and steep terrain.
Housing/Stipend/Duration: Housing will not be provided but a vehicle is available during work hours for work responsibilities only. Personal vehicle is highly recommended for non-work hours. $167.75/week stipend. This is a 3-4 month internship, full time (40hrs/wk), flexible schedule.
