Plant Biology Intern (Local Candidate)

You will assist the park biologist with vegetation monitoring along Fire Island's significant natural areas. Primary duties: survey vegetation within permanent plots, map vegetation and plots using GPS, produce GIS maps, assist with tree core analysis, assist in end-of-season report and other administrative duties (70%).  You will assist resource management staff with management and monitoring of various breeding shorebirds through daily observations, primarily the Piping Plover (a threatened species), Seabeach Amaranth (threatened plant species), in addition to erecting public-use fencing and construct predator exclosure (10%). You'll work on GIS to develop maps and organize field data (15%), and occasionally aid in the recovery and examination of stranded marine animals. There may be networking opportunities through assisting with other programs and various researchers from academic institutions (5%). EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:You may have the opportunity to participate in local conferences, events, and educational programs at the park. There is usually a field trip to the local aquarium, wildlife rehabilitation center with backstage access and tour, and another nearby National Park Service unit. You may also be involved in several other resource management programs at the park.
