My name is Matthew Ezell Cottam. I hail from Tennessee and have
followed my passions for the wilderness, adventure and new
perspectives to the SCA and the Pacific Crest Trail. I was raised in
Memphis, spent the last 11 summers working and playing in and around
Nashville, and after 6 years of higher education in Knoxville I
decided that it was time to experience some bigger mountains and wider
open spaces. I love getting to know people, climbing, and am engaged
in an ongoing quest for the perfect Pad Thai. May your trails be dim,
lonesome, stony, narrow, winding, and only slightly uphill. Peace.
Raised in the flatlands of Nebraska, I've consistently headed West to
get my mountain fix. Along with personal back-packing trips in
Colorado and Wyoming, I spent last summer working in Montana's Bob
Marshall Wilderness Complex. I am a music, reading, and history
enthusiast who enjoys any and all types of outdoor recreation. I'm
excited to spend the next 6 months with my new crew-family, living,
working, and playing in the Sierra's.
Originally from Minnesota, I began my work for the SCA in 2007 as a member of the Pacific Crest Trail Crew in California. It was on the PCT that I got my first taste of trail maintenance and conservation and I loved it from the start. Since then I've worked in a variety of places doing conservation work. A backcountry ranger internship in Kentucky and trail crews in Virginia, Lake Tahoe, New Mexico, and Southern Illinois. I graduated with a degree in Envrionmental Geology and a Music minor from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. In 2010 I traveled west again to do a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. After 5 months of hiking I had successfully walked from Mexico to Canada. My travels continue to this day and I'm very excited to work on the PCT again to help preserve the world's greatest hiking trail.
