In partnership with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, The Nature Conservancy, and other agencies and organizations, Corps teams focus on the delivery of fire prevention and educational programming to communities within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Teams complete mapping and GIS data collection and fuels reduction programs. Many of the teams provide ‘defensible space’ home evaluations to local homeowners and work with communities to achieve FireWise certification.
In partnership with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and several Native American tribes, Corps teams collect forest/fuel inventory data to develop fuels layer maps and analyze data to manage forest health. Based on a standard set of protocols, the data collected includes site characteristics, vegetation composition, fuel loads and burn indexes. This data is combined with existing GIS information and is utilized for pre-treatment and post-treatment analysis of fuel reduction efforts or wildland fires. It also becomes useful in forest inventory monitoring.
