The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a leading provider of conservation service, outdoor skills training, and leadership development for youth in the U.S. See www.thesca.org for more information. SCA’s mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders.
Position Summary: The Outreach & Education Intern will work as part of a team to plan and implement educational and conservation service projects for urban youth in Washington, DC
Position Description: There are two primary areas of focus for this internship, described below. (a) As part of a new pilot project, GOAL! (Get Out & Learn!), the intern would be responsible for working with existing and new partner agencies to identify and plan meaningful outdoor trail and conservation activities that will engage middle and elementary school children in the outdoors. Responsibilities include: Researching and identifying local schools, community centers and after school programs Setting up meetings with contacts at those schools and agencies Planning for field trips and related paperwork, transportation and chaperones Doing pre-project site visits Helping create evaluation tools for this project and documenting all of the above
(b) The intern would also support SCA’s longstanding Conservation Leadership Corps program by: Recruiting high school students at community centers, schools, and via the internet Helping to develop and facilitate leadership and environmental education activities for high school age youth Communicating with crew leaders and crew members about upcoming trips and meetings
In addition to the focus areas above, the intern will support SCA’s programs as needed and as time permits, including administrative work such as data entry, food/gear shopping, typing meeting notes, representing SCA at community events, etc.
Desired Qualifications • Experience working with urban youth in outdoor education, youth development or school programming • Prior experience in developing partnerships, coordinating service projects and/or recruiting youth • Knowledge of and experience leading environmental education • Self-motivated and flexible team player • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain • Valid drivers license and clean driving record • Aged 21 years or older
