EarthCorps Corps Program Manager - 2008/07/03 16:55
EarthCorps is seeking to fill a new, mid-level management position that will oversee the Corps Program at EarthCorps. As a conservation corps with 60 corps members annually, we do a wide array of restoration and conservation type work in and around King County, WA. Our corps members come from around the US and around the world. We have a dynamic education program that is spear headed by an education coordinator. We have a large volunteer program that involves more than 10,000 volunteer annually. Our website, www.earthcorps.org gives a good picture of what we do and who we are.

The Corps Program Manager will oversee the corps program. Key aspects of program operation include: risk management, staff hiring, mentoring, program development, budgeting, grant and report writing, and teaching. This position requires a sense of humor, a love of young adults, experience with multi-cultural dynamics, strong team building skills and experience in the restoration field.
The Corps Program Manager will work together with all program staff to design and implement a solid corps program experience for our up and coming young adult leaders ages 18-25. The ideal candidate will have 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in management and have a strong aptitude for personnel and HR issues.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Corps Program Manager is a full time, exempt position in EarthCorps. The Corps Program Manager is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the corps program which involves two unique but similar programs for young adults ages 18-25. The young adults are AmeriCorps members and International participants organized into six person crews including a crew leader. These two programs each run approximately eleven months with offset start and end dates. The Corps Program Manager directly supervises two program staff who directly supervise the crew leaders and corps members. This position works closely with the Education Coordinator, Recruiting and Admin Manager and the International Program Manager to ensure that the overall programming meets organizational and annual program goals. The Corps Program Manager reports to the Director of Programs. This position is 90% office-based and 10% field based.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Leadership:
• Hire, train, evaluate and supervise program managers.
• Collaborate with the International Program Manager to ensure that international participants are recruited, trained and supervised in a manner that satisfies J-1 visa requirements and meshes with AmeriCorps mission and goals.
• Collaborate with the Education Coordinator to ensure that program managers have the proper resources allocated in order to deliver relevant education programs.
• Triangulate and synthesize the recruiting process with the Recruiting Manager and the International Program Manager to ensure that the most appropriate international and AmeriCorps participants are selected. Review and finalize all selected participants in collaboration with the Program Director.
• Consolidate the efforts of the volunteer program staff to ensure that the corps program is effectively trained in volunteer management and develops productive relations with volunteers and the volunteer program.
Program Management:
• Develop, implement and evaluate program operation plans in accordance with Americorps and WA Service Corps’ expectations and EC’s strategic plan.
• Manage AmeriCorps and Washington Service Corps relationships and ensure that appropriate reporting is completed.
• Update, implement, monitor and enforce all EC risk management policies and procedures as related to the corps program.
• Insure program quality by reviewing corps members’ evaluations, attending 4-6 off-site retreats annually, providing HR support and appraising crew dynamics in the field.
• Insure crew leaders are adequately and effectively trained.
Sustainability:
• Participate in staff meetings to keep colleagues fully informed of program successes and challenges.
• Work to create a collaborative and team driven program that delivers the highest quality program to the corps members.
• Participate in staff trainings, workshops, retreats, and other individual professional trainings in order to stay inspired, informed and proactive in terms of program design and development.
• Collaborate with Field Director to ensure that crews have the widest range of restoration opportunities possible, are trained adequately for such work and have the appropriate equipment and tools.
• Collaborate with the Program Director in identifying and incorporating new program elements and partnerships to enhance program quality that fulfill EC’s mission.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience and 3 or more years working for a conservation corps or similar organization required.
• Demonstrated management skills including staff supervision and development required.
• 2 or more years supervising and working with young adults required
• Education and/or experience related to habitat restoration with Northwest native plants and urban forests required.
• Hands-on experience with field work such as wetland, riparian, or upland habitat restoration; trail construction and maintenance; backcountry living and travel and tool use and maintenance required.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently in an office and field setting, maintain self-motivation and persist in the face of obstacles. Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to travel independently throughout the region including car and ferry trips required. Work requires some overnights and weekends.
• Ability to work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather required
• Ability to walk and lift 30 pounds.
• Wilderness First Responder or higher certification required.
• Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office programs essential.
