Service Dates: June 2, 2008 – November 15, 2008

Spend this summer in the rugged North Cascades backcountry!

The Wilderness Backcountry Ranger will work within the Wenatchee National Forest backpacking for extended multi-day spikes in high mountain environments contacting all types of trail users, providing area information, promoting user cooperation and educating the public on proper use practices.

Rangers will keep a daily log of use data and trail conditions. Areas patrolled harbor a variety of trail use opportunities including mountain biking, motorcycle riding, horse riding and hiking trail systems.

Ideally, the Rangers will have a background knowledge of the effects of recreation on high elevation environments and be able to clearly communicate a tread lightly message while educating users on proper travel and leave-no-trace techniques. Rangers will be expected live in the back country and lead by example for others by observing and adhering to all Wilderness regulations and guidelines. This position involves being educated on current issues, and controversial use practices (national and regional), affecting recreation on public land.

Position Requirements:
1. Be able to spend extended periods alone in the backcountry, and be self sufficient for 4-8 days at a time.
2. Be physically fit, able to walk long distances over extended periods of time, in a steep mountain environment.
3. Be able to carry heavy loads (backpack), for long distances across steep elevation gains (as much as 2000-5000 vertical ft a day).
4. Be able to tolerate extreme heat and cold. The season will start with snow on the ground and end with snow on the ground; in between it will be hot and dusty.
5. Comfortable contacting and communicating with members of the public in a remote setting.
6. Enthusiastic about all types of trail recreation.
7. 21 years of age or older, at beginning of service term.
8. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
9. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
10. Regular and reliable attendance.
11. Have not previously served two terms in an AmeriCorps*State or National program. Members may serve up to three terms in a National Service Program, but only two terms may be within an AmeriCorps*State or National program.
12. Must have a valid state driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experienced and knowledgeable about tread lightly and leave-no-trace, Wilderness ethics.
2. Experienced in spending extended periods backpacking in the back country.
3. Experience in communicating with the public.
4. Knowledgeable/educated about high elevation, and fragile ecosystems.
5. Educated on current issues, and controversial use practices, (national and regional), affecting recreation on public land.
6. Diverse recreational background, we are looking for someone with a passion for all types of trail recreation, i.e.; mountain biking, hiking, motorcycles, and horse back riding.

Member Benefits Include:
A living allowance of $5,876 (approx. $979 per month), an education award of $2,362, loan forbearance, basic medical insurance, CPR and First Aid Certifications. Lodging will be provided for this position.
