Harvard Alumni - Request for Nominations - 2008/03/27 14:09 Dear Alumni Community,

We are writing to solicit nominations for the Anne Roe Award, described below. As you may know, the recipient is invited to give an address at HGSE, is recognized at an award ceremony, and receives an honorarium.

In 1963, Anne Roe was appointed professor of education, the first woman to hold that rank at the Graduate School of Education and the ninth woman to do so within Harvard University. A clinical psychologist and educator, her courses and research focused on guidance-the study of the career as part of a total life history and the selection and pursuit of educational and vocational goals throughout life. A prolific writer, Roe published over 100 books and articles during her career.

She was a director of the American Psychological Association, president of the APA clinical division, a member of the psychology committee of the training grants program at the National Institute of Mental Health, and a director of the Massachusetts Psychological Association.

In 1979, the Anne Roe Award was created in her honor. The purpose of the award is "to bring to HGSE a leading educator who has contributed significantly in the field of education to women's professional growth."

Previous awardees include:

- Sister Joel Read (1980), President, Alverno College, Milwaukee, WI for a curriculum that encouraged women to enter non-traditional careers as well as her activism, which led to greater visibility and recognition of women in academic administration.

- Bernice Sandler (1988), Director, Project on the Status and Education of Women, Association of American Colleges, Washington, DC in recognition of her work as a powerful conscience for colleges and universities as well as a dogged crusader against inequities in the academy.

- Gloria Steinem (1999), for providing a model of leadership and excellence to women, breaking down traditional stereotyped expectations for men and women, empowering women to help themselves and for making significant contributions to the local community, education profession, and nation.

- Geeta Rao Gupta (2006), president of the International Center for Research on Women, and a leading global authority on women's role in economic development, for her commitment to quality research, her dedication to educating policy makers and the public on the gender-related aspects of HIV/AIDS, and her abiding commitment and overall contributions to the field.

Nominations for the Anne Roe Award will be accepted from the entire HGSE community and a selection committee comprised of faculty, students, and staff will choose the recipient. When making a nomination, please indicate the nominee's name; briefly describe his or her qualifications for the award; and provide a CV, article, or other background material.

The nominee "should be a person who:
- Provides a model of leadership and excellence to women;
- Has made channels of professional growth more accessible to women;
- Has broken down traditional stereotyped expectations for men and women;
- Has empowered women to help themselves;
- Has made a significant contribution to the local community, education profession, or nation."
