AmeriCorps Crew Member - MN - 2008/08/12 13:12
AmeriCorps Position: 4 Crew Members (ages 18-25) Location: 2 member openings in Duluth, 1 member opening in New Ulm & 1 member opening in Brainerd Term of Service: September 2nd to December 18th 2008
The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC), a non-profit environmental organization, is currently accepting applications for 2 Crew Members in Duluth, 1 Crew Member in New Ulm, and 1 Crew Member in Brainerd, MN. Crew Members will join 1 Crew leader and 2 or 3 other members that started in February. Crews participate in on-the-job training to learn natural resources management skills and put those skills into practice working on conservation projects. A position with MCC involves physically challenging, team-oriented work while learning about the environment and networking with natural resource professionals. Project sites vary throughout Minnesota including urban settings and extreme wilderness. Service work is performed almost exclusively outdoors and may involve camping for several days at a time.
Responsibilities: Crew Members will receive training and complete various conservation projects such as tree planting, prairie restoration, streambank stabilization, GPS/GIS mapping, wildlife surveys, carpentry/construction, timber stand improvement, lakeshore restoration, erosion control, prescribed burning, environmental education, trail construction & maintenance, exotic species management, wildlife habitat improvement, wildland fire fighting and emergency response.
Benefits: MCC Crew Members will receive a living stipend of $1066 a month, health insurance, student loan forbearance during the service term, and a post-service AmeriCorps Education Award for $1250-$1475 that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans.
Qualifications: Crew Members: •Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and on challenging terrain. •Ability to work well with others in a team setting. •Strong desire to learn new skills and abilities. •Positive attitude and interest in service and community work. •Sense of adventure.
Requirements: Must be 18-25 years old and be able to perform essential functions of the job including physically strenuous work 40 hours per week. Typical work week is Monday-Thursday (10 hours each day) with other days scheduled as required. Crew Members should be available for week-long out of town assignments that involve camping near the work project site. A full term of service must be completed in order to receive an education award. Personal protective equipment provided and required.
