VISTA position at Minnesota Conservation Corps - 2008/07/11 15:45
Position available: Program Expansion & Development VISTA
The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC) provides hands-on environmental stewardship and service-learning opportunities to youth and young adults while accomplishing priority cost-effective conservation and natural resource management projects and emergency response work.
The Program Expansion & Development VISTA member will expand and improve MCC’s current youth programming in order to better serve low-income communities throughout the Twin Cities. The member will address barriers to participation in impoverished communities, implement appropriate solutions within MCC and recruit from those communities. Primarily, this member will assist in the expansion of the existing Youth Outdoors Program and development of other urban youth programming. This will be done through grant research and preparation, recruitment, and program coordination with MCC staff and partners. The member will be directly supervised by the Youth Programs Manager and will work collaboratively with Development and Program staff.

Primary Responsibilities: • Coordinate, expand and develop Youth Outdoors Program • Evaluate pilot program and refine program structure and activities as needed • Recruit leaders, youth, and project sponsors for Youth Outdoors Program • Establish and cultivate partnerships with organizations serving low-income communities • Assist in establishing an urban camping experience at Lilydale Park • Identify and apply for grants • Solicit additional funding sources • Develop a Youth Advisory Council for MCC’s youth programs • Recruit youth participants for Youth Advisory Council and oversee meetings
Other Responsibilities: • Assist Youth Programs Manager and other central office staff with projects as requested • Support Development staff with grant research and preparation
Minimum Qualifications: • Passion about the mission of VISTA and MCC • Excellent written communication • Good interpersonal skills and oral communication skills • Ability to work independently • Exceptional time management, organizational skills and attention to detail • Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of standard programs (MS Office)
Desired Qualifications: • Interest in non-profit management and/or development • Conservation and/or youth development experience • Grant writing and/or fundraising skills • Experience developing or coordinating youth programs of a similar size and nature • Experience working with databases
Benefits: VISTA members who successfully complete a year-long term of service are eligible to receive either an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 or a $1,200 end-of-service stipend. Additional benefits include training, a $900 monthly living allowance, health care benefits, relocation expenses, student-loan forbearance or deferment, and non-competitive eligibility.
