Water Trails Crew Member with MCC - 2008/04/09 11:07 AmeriCorps Position: 2 Crew Members (ages 18-25)
Location: St Paul, Minnesota
Term of Service: April 21st - Mid-October 2008 (with possible option to extend to Dec 18)

The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC), a non-profit environmental organization, is currently accepting applications for 2 Crew Members for the 2008 Water Trails crew. This 3 member crew (2 members and 1 leader) will participate in on-the-job training to learn needed skills for maintaining Minnesota’s designated canoe and boating routes. A position with MCC involves completing physically challenging, team-oriented work while learning about the environment and networking with natural resource professionals. Project sites will vary and be focused on rivers in central and southern Minnesota. Crew will be required to work on a flexible schedule including extended spike trips and weekend work.

Responsibilities: Crew Members will receive training and complete various conservation projects such as river snag removal, GPS/GIS mapping, water access maintenance, campsite construction & maintenance. Crew Leader will be responsible for project management, training and development of Crew Members. The Crew Leader is responsible for the crew’s overall work performance and safety during a project. Crew Leader will be supervised by an MCC District Manager.

Benefits: MCC Crew Members will receive a living stipend of $1066-$1155 a month, health insurance, student loan forbearance during the service term, and a post-service AmeriCorps Education Award for $2362.50 that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans.

Qualifications:
Crew Members:
•Previous chain saw experience (with professional agency/company)
•Basic boating competency (motor boat and canoe/kayak)
•Ability to work and camp outdoors in adverse conditions for extended periods including weekends.
•Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
•Strong desire to learn new skills and abilities.
•Sense of adventure and positive attitude.
•AmeriCorps eligibility preferred, but not required.

Requirements: Must be 18-25 years old and be able to perform essential functions of the job including physically strenuous work for multiple days. Work week schedule will change throughout term as needed to accomplish tasks and based on factors such as water levels and weather. Crew Members should be available for extended out of town assignments that involve camping near the work project site. A full term of service must be completed in order to receive an education award. Personal protective equipment provided and required.
