Aspen vista - 2006/05/06 07:09 The Aspen vista trail just outside Santa Fe, NM is the hike that turned me into a hiker. I went there with my kindergarden class in October one year, just after the aspens had turned golden. We stopped by a creek for lunch, I picked wild strawberries with my best friend and watched the falling leaves dance through the air and be carried away by the water. The entire forest floor was carpeted in yellow and orange. It was and is the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

For the slightly more experienced hiker, you can follow the trail from it's base to the top of the mountian which becomes the Santa Fe ski area in the winter, but in summer or fall it is mostly deserted and you have a beautiful view of the city to one side and the mountians to the other. If you go in the spring bring some warm clothes, because in late june last year I was still trudging through the snow for a bit (in my sandals, how refreshing!)

Re:Aspen vista - 2006/05/31 23:43 I love this hike, too. I've done it many times, in all kinds of weather, with huge crowds of people and dogs and xc skiers after a fresh snow fall, and all alone on a week day morning. I once ran down the trail with a friend during a very scary lightning and thunder storm. It's always beautiful, no matter what!
