Save Anacostia Park & River in D.C. - 2006/10/27 19:20
I am part of Earth Conservation Corps(ECC)as an Americorps Volunteer in Washington, D.C. I work as an ECC Riverkeeper giving out tours (history, wildlife, plants) and community volunteer work mostly around Anacostia River & Park such as: trash cleanups, planting, tours river tours,etc...
My major goal for this program is for Poplar Point, which is part of Anacostia Park. National Park Service is giving up 110 acres of Poplar point to the Waterfront foundation, and they are trying to get a plan to build another stadium right across the river from the new baseball stadium for "The Nationals". We are trying to prevent that from happening. We want that park for the community of D.C. Their plan is to build that stadium, which will take up 40 acres for the stadium and leave 70 acres to the park for the people.
We want the park for free, half of Poplar Point is waistland, fenced off from the public. We could use the $40 million dollars for the enviroment around Anacostia, for events, more volunteer organizations, etc.. Before our third trymester we want to have events in the park, so they will see that we don't need a stadium there. Two stadiums are around Anacostia River.. RFK, and the new Nationals stadium.. All this pollutes and will pollute the river even more.
So we can use all the help we can get. For the tour of the River please call Joshua Burch my instructor to Schedule a tour of the Anacostia River 202-554-1960 And my name is Timothy S. Critchfield
