GPS Mapping Specialist and Trails Assessor (2 positions)

Position Description:
Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) is committed to providing recreation for all, including the maintenance and development of recreational and interpretive trails. The need for an extensive trail and resource inventory has been identified within the agency to provide critical information for resource stewardship and development of these public lands. Using Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) technology, the location of trails, facilities, and various natural and cultural features will be recorded on-site. The field data will be entered into an agency-wide database and used for spatial mapping applications. These findings will inform the development of a model for aligning permitted trail uses and identifying locations with environmental constraints. AmeriCorps members will benefit from advanced training in resource grade GPS technology and extensive understanding and development of WSPRC recreational trail standards. They will also gain priceless experiences exploring the premier destinations of uncommon quality that are Washington State Parks.
General Responsibilities:
1. Apply basic and advanced concepts of mapping grade GPS.
2. Learn and apply Trimble GPS software functionality.
3. Learn the standards and considerations for trail construction and resource maintenance.
4. Travel to various properties in the State Parks system.
5. Work cooperatively with park staff and project lead to gather all necessary data.
6. Hike, and occasionally bike or drive park trails and roads.
7. Collect photo documentation of trail features.
8. Work with and edit collected data, both within a GPS unit and on a laptop.
9. Provide completed data to park staff and project lead.
Required Skills
1. Ability to hike long distances and for long periods of time on sometimes primitive trails.
2. Attention to detail with an affinity for technology.
3. Ability to read maps.
4. Strong interest in outdoor recreation.
5. Self directed and motivated.
6. Good communication skills.
7. Must have a valid drivers license and take Defensive Driving Training to qualify for state vehicle.
8. Works well with people.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Prior experience with Trimble GPS products.
2. Has some familiarity with basic GIS concepts.
