This is an Excepted Service Appointment. Initial appointments to the Peace Corps normally are for 30 months, but may be extended up to 5 years. Employees are paid on the Foreign Service pay scale and receive the same benefits as other Federal employees.

A background security investigation will be required for all hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant?s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

DUTIES:

This position is located in the Peace Corps, Center for Field Assistance and Applied Research, Overseas Training Division, Information Collection and Exchange Unit. The incumbent observes and arranges for the secure handling of materials; assists readers with the use of the library's print and electronic resources including the use of the library's bibliographic reference sources; communicates with a wide variety of patrons with non-routine questions on borrowing privileges and the location of material and other specialized questions specific to the material; exercises good public relations practices in soliciting information; demonstrates an understanding of the demands and attitudes of various interested and affected groups; and determines the best way of formulating requests and utilizes good judgment in the selection and presentation of the information

Performs a variety of duties and tasks related to customer service. Provides efficient, courteous, and prompt in-person service. Assists patrons with use of research and reading room facilities including providing both telephone and email assistance with locating information sources and searching a variety of information technology tools available to users. Communicates with other staff to ensure good customer service.

Researches and gathers information from a variety of sources, both automated and in print or other media. Facilitates services to readers, analyzes information, and disseminates it in answer to requests or inquiries from a variety of sources. Develops files, bibliographies, finding aids, and other sources. Provides copy cataloging services using references, standards, and automated bibliographic systems. Performs additional technical duties in support of the cataloging functions of a library. Maintains and updates library catalog. Completes library acquisitions, including printed books, serial publications, multimedia items, print and on-line reference materials. Performs indexing by analyzing informational items such as journal articles or technical reports and assigning descriptive terms to facilitate retrieval of the items. Analyzes and organizes information and materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to communicate effectively.

Knowledge of integrated library systems, library applications, and other information technologies.

Knowledge of the subject areas of the library's collection.

Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of technical information services, including copy cataloging and Interlibrary loan services.

Ability to plan work and meet deadlines.

MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifying experience for the FP-05 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the FP-06 or GS-8 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: The experience requirements for the FP-05 level may be met by completion of two (2) years of graduate level education or a master's degree in library/library and information science with courses such as information organization and retrieval, cataloging and classification, abstraction, knowledge structures, information services, acquisition and collections development, reference services and resources, or other position-related courses.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

DIRECT DEPOSIT: All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit to a financial institution of their choosing.
