The C&O Canal Trust, the official nonprofit friends group to the C&O Canal National Historical Park is now hiring a full-time Program Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and manage Canal Pride Days, the Trust’s annual volunteer event – maintain event planning documents and schedules as well as a volunteer database; identify and become familiar with volunteer projects in cooperation with the Park; recruit, motivate, and support volunteers, both individuals and groups, from local educational, social, and recreational organizations; coordinate refreshments, registration, and other logistics for all events; ensure that all constituents have a positive experience and are satisfied by the outcomes of programs and events.
Manage significant aspects of Canal Quarters – recruit, train, and support volunteer Quartermasters; provide on-site support to registrants as necessary; prepare program status reports as required; work with Trust staff to develop and maintain Canal Quarters website.
Oversee the launch of the Canal Stewards program – identify appropriate volunteer adoption sites; work with NPS staff to identify and gain approval of appropriate tasks; recruit volunteers and coordinate monthly projects at various sites along the canal; develop new volunteer opportunities throughout the year; assist in developing and updating program budgets; prepare programmatic proposals and grant reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
College degree in related field required
Professional experience in volunteer coordination, historic preservation, and/or environmental conservation strongly preferred
Proven leadership and organizational skills
Customer-service approach to all professional relationships
Excellent communication (oral and written) skills and the ability to excel at details, multi-tasking and working under deadlines
Must have experience in the use of software programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Able to lift 50 pounds and handle minor household maintenance tasks
Must be available to work on weekends throughout the year
Experience with the National Park Service is a plus
