Potomac Conservancy Clean Water Organizer Silverspring, MD

 

Position Description:

Potomac Conservancy (www.potomac.org) is seeking an organizer to build a base of at least 5,000 advocates in targeted localities to speak up for clean water.   The initial focus will be in Northern Virginia.  The ideal candidate will be able to integrate in-person organizing with on-line engagement strategies to enact policies to reduce polluted runoff and to secure additional funding for clean water initiatives.   This is a part of the Potomac Conservancy’s on-going efforts to advocate for river-friendly land use policies and decisions at the local level.

 

The successful candidate will participate in the development and implementation of a multi-channel organizing effort as the Conservancy seeks to expand its public policy work on behalf of the Nation’s River.  The Organizer will report to the President and also work closely with other program staff and the members of the Board, including the Policy Committee.  There is the option for the organizer to work out of a home office in Northern Virginia.  Preference will be given to candidates that have familiarity with Loudoun County.  This position is a one-year term position with the possibility of being extended.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

                         Lead organizing efforts in northern Virginia, helping communities develop and implement plans to address water quality problems;

                         Recruit and train volunteers that will advocate for their local streams and the Potomac River in front of elected officials; 

                        Represent the Conservancy in meetings and other events with allies and others;

                         Manage lists, files and databases needed for work assignments;

                         Research, write, design, produce and distribute flyers, fact sheets, reports and other written  

                         products; 

                         Develop on-line communication and activation tools to engage community advocates;

                         Assist with fundraising, administration, financial management as related to the campaign;

                         Participate in other issue campaigns in the Potomac watershed.

 

Qualifications:

                         At least 2 years experience with issue or campaign organizing;

                         Familiarity with local governments in Northern Virginia;

                         Excellent spoken and written communication skills;

                         Good at working with people, motivating and managing volunteers;

                         Good judgment; well organized and able to handle multiple responsibilities; 

                         Able to work effectively with on-line and information-technology systems;

                         Highly productive, hardworking, and reliable work style, able to meet deadlines and complete

                         assignments in timely fashion;

                         Interest in environmental issues and passion for the Conservancy’s mission;

                          Must be able to work evenings and weekends, as needed;

                         College degree.
