Outward Bound California (OBCA) is a non-profit organization offering experiential learning programs that challenge students to develop the skills and discover their inner strength to succeed in their schools, communities and throughout their lives. OBCA is hiring Urban Instructors for the 2012-13 school year. Urban Instructors work directly with our partner schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Instructors will be paired with schools based on their exhibited skill-set and the needs of individual schools. This is an entry-level part-time position with opportunities for development over time. Contracts are offered for the length of the school year (September 2012-May 2013). Candidates of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitate classroom-based leadership curriculum
• Collaborate with classroom teacher(s) to ensure program objectives are met
• Facilitate full day outdoor adventure programs
• Complete and manage administrative paperwork as needed
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Experience working with youth ages 11-18 in an educational and/or recreational context
• Clean driving record and background check
• Effective communication skills with diverse audiences
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Passion and dedication to experiential education for urban youth
• Interest in professional development and willingness to give and receive performance feedback
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese language skills
• San Francisco/Bay Area native
• Experience working with urban youth, youth at risk, or English language learners
• Previous experience with Outward Bound or relevant experiences
