Employee Safety Intern:

Background:

Located in the southern part of West Virginia, New River Gorge National River encompasses 53 miles of river and its gorge. New River Gorge National River was established in 1978 to preserve and protect the natural, culture, and recreational resources of the New River. Some of the many traditional uses include hunting, fishing, hiking, bicycling, and white water rafting.

With over 100 employees, NERI has a serious need for assistance in taking our safety program to the next level. Our management team and safety committee is dedicated to advancing our safety program, but like most parks, we are challenged by a reduction of staffing and the absence of a qualified professional safety officer.

A risk management intern could assist our park with implementing provisions of RM50 that would help reduce and prevent employee workplace accidents and injuries. The candidate would work along with our safety team, managers, supervisors and employees to develop sustainable programs and procedures that would assist our employees in developing and maintaining a safe workplace.

Internship Goals and Objectives:

At the conclusion of the internship, we would expect to have obtained measurable results that show a significant progression towards a sustainable safety program. One of our park safety program weaknesses is poor or non-existing documentation. The safety risk management intern would develop a system that would assist our staff in sustaining a solid documentation program that would transcend a revolving safety committee, CDSO's, and managers and supervisors that are reassigned, relocate or leave the agency.

Project Tasks:

  • Develop a mandatory safety training schedule for all employees.
  • Compilation of risk management tools for routine and high risk tasks.
  • Update and review written policies and Standard Operating Procedure's.
  • Review and update written JHA's and consolidate into a shared directory.
  • Review and update MSDS information

Special Skills Required:

We seek a candidate who:

  • can work with minimal supervision,
  • is knowledgeable and/or familiar with OSHA regulations,
  • and can conduct research that provides specific solutions to employee health and safety challenges.
  • The candidate should be able to interpret written direction from RM 50 and offer solutions that will help develop a successful safety program.
