Employee Safety Intern:

NPS Education and Outreach Interns will support park injury prevention efforts and enhance visitor and employee safety programs.

Glacier National Park preserves more than a million acres of forests, alpine meadows, lakes, rugged peaks and glacial-carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Its diverse habitats are home to nearly 70 species of mammals including the grizzly bear, wolverine, gray wolf and lynx. Over 270 species of birds visit or reside in the park, including such varied species as harlequin ducks, dippers and golden eagles. The landscape is a hiker's paradise that is traversed by more than 740 miles of maintained trails.

Glacier Park's varied climate influences and its location at the headwaters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Hudson Bay drainages have given rise to an incredible variety of plants and animals. The park is named for its prominent glacier-carved terrain and remnant glaciers descended from the ice ages of 10,000 years past. Bedrock and deposited materials exposed by receding glaciers tell a story of ancient seas, geologic faults and uplifting, and the movement of giant slabs of the earth's ancient crust overlaying younger strata. The result of these combined forces is some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet.

Internship Goals and Objectives:

  • Insure all of our buildings that need fire extinguishers have them and they are in the most beneficial locations.
  • Establish who will be responsible for the monthly fire extinguisher inspections for each building.
  • Record where each fire extinguisher is located and what type of maintenance will be necessary: one year, six year, or twelve year.
  • Create an emergency evacuation plan for the buildings that need one.
  • Conduct a hazardous materials inventory and insure all MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) stations are up to date.
  • Help adjust the parks HAZCOM (Hazard Communication) program to insure products easily located in a computer based master list.
  • Create an Emergency Action Plan for the park.

Project Tasks:

  • The first project would be conducting a park wide fire extinguisher inventory and needs assessment. This project includes creating a building floor plan, if one does not exist, make recommendations for the ideal quantity and placement of extinguishers. Mark where the extinguishers are in the floor plan and create an emergency evacuation plan for the building that will be filed and posted as appropriate.
  • The intern will also help determine what division is primarily responsible for the building, or the most likely division to be in a position to perform monthly inspections. This project will involve almost 400 buildings and is expected to take two to three months.
  • If time allows the second project will be to inspect our HazCom program and make recommendations for improvements. Insure all MSDS stations are current and that the Master list is updated.
  • If time allows create an Emergency Action Plan for the park.
