Risk Communication Intern:

The Public Risk Management Program is part of the Office of Risk Management located at the National Park Service headquarters office in downtown Washington, DC. The mission of this program is to provide park units with the necessary policies, guidelines, information, training, and assistance to evaluate their unit’s public risk and to establish risk management and injury prevention programs that will minimize the potential for suffering or loss and enhance the visitor experience within our National Park System.The National Park Service is committed to reducing the number of unintentional injuries among our visitors.

The Public Risk Management Program seeks a Risk Communication Intern to increase visitor awareness and reduce injuries and illness by assisting in three main projects as well as participating in other critical PRMP projects as assigned:

  1. WebRangers (www.nps.gov/webrangers): Develop a web-based, interactive hiking safety activity for this on-line Junior Ranger Program that provides informal learning opportunities about national parks to children ages 6-12. This project will continue initiatives started by previous interns to develop a series of safety-related online educational modules for youth. The intern will conduct research and develop the content of creative, web-based games and storyboard the activities to build children’s awareness and capacity to enjoy our treasured landscapes safely; conduct literature reviews and research data from relevant industries for evidence-based findings on safety practices and communicating safety messages; and possibly travel to national parks in Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania to gather data and collect media.
  2. Safe Adventures Library: Assist parks to improve park safety information for the public on the NPS website (www.nps.gov) through the development of standardized language approved by subject matter experts. This project will continue an initiative started by previous interns to enhance park efforts to accurately communicate relevant risks using language that is consistent Servicewide.
  3. Conduct literature review on various injury issues, add relevant publications to an electronic literature library, and develop methods to share library with NPS employees and providing periodic summaries of the most current peer reviewed literature.

Required Qualifications:

  • Intern must have excellent analytic skills, be highly organized, and be able to take initiative and work independently.
  • Intern must be skilled at synthesizing data and information into a well-written document; be able to conduct literature reviews and review industry standards in a range of public health areas (from injury to disease transmission); have a basic understanding of and interest in injury epidemiology; and be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • This position does not require knowledge of computer programming.
