Bike Safety Education & Outreach Intern: NPS Education and Outreach Interns will support park injury prevention efforts and enhance visitor and employee safety programs.
The Cape Cod National Seashore was created on August 7, 1961 by President John F. Kennedy and encompasses 43,500 acre on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It includes ponds, woods and beachfront of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecoregion. The Seashore includes nearly 40 miles of seashore along the Atlantic-facing eastern edge of Cape Cod, in the towns of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Chatham. Cape Cod National Seashore has the dual goal of protecting precious, ecologically fragile land, while allowing the public to enjoy a unique resource.
With support and guidance from park staff and the Public Risk Management Program (PRMP) staff the intern will:
- Design safety messages using a variety of mediums (social media, print, radio, etc.)
- Implement and conduct educational safety outreach program in the park in the area of bike accidents
- Develop a safety education initiative on bike accidents as part of the Junior Ranger program
- Draft templates and materials to develop and implement a Volunteer Bike Ranger Program
- Draft a document outlining accomplishments and identify possible next steps to further education and outreach efforts.
In addition to the objectives above, the park would like the intern to assist with the following:
- Conduct targeted safety interactions on the bike trails
- Assist in continuing our bike helmet distribution program.
- Work with community partners (especially local police departments and bike shops) in an educational outreach event such as Bike Safe Day & other safe biking initiatives.
- Assist the Interpretation Division in creating a web-available video of the bike trail as a means of informing the public about the trail. Encourage the use of this free video to bike shops, hotels and local Chambers of Commerce.
Required Qualifications:
- Interns must have excellent analytic skills, be highly organized, and be able to take initiative and work independently.
- Interns should be skilled at synthesizing data and information into a well-written document.
- They should have a basic understanding of and interest in injury epidemiology and public health.
- Interns should be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Power Point.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Intern must be 25 years old or younger at the start of the internship.
