Ocean Science and Leadership Expedition - Prince William Sound, Alaska - August 2010
The Ocean Science and Leadership Expedition (OSLE) is a 10-day summer intensive learning experience for high school students in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Working with local marine scientists and educators, you will learn about-- and experience firsthand-- oceanographic principles and marine environmental issues such as oil spills, marine debris, and climate change. Students may earn 1 college credit from Prince William Sound Community College.
The course includes a 4-day sea kayaking expedition to Columbia Glacier in Prince William Sound, where you will experience firsthand the issues facing the marine ecosystem. You will camp on remote beaches and learn Leave-No-Trace techniques for wilderness exploration, while building leadership skills through experiential learning.
The course will also take you to Valdez, Alaska, where you will meet with experts to engage in a case study of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the environmental disaster that shaped Prince William Sound. You will emerge with a greater awareness of the significance of coastal and marine ecosystems, a personal connection to the ocean, and the skills to become an environmental leader.
The course is limited to 10 students. Participants will be actively involved in all aspects of the small group learning and living environment. Tuition is $1100; scholarships are available. See the attached brochure and application form.

About PWSSC summer education programs:
Our mission is to provide tools and guidance to students to increase their awareness of the interdependence of local ecosystems. We combine hands-on environmental science education with positive experiences in the outdoors to build a foundation of knowledge for students to use as they grow into environmental leaders. All of our activities are exploration based, designed to help students form a deeper scientific understanding of the ecosystems of the area and build personal connections to the land, while developing self confidence and teamwork skills. Our staff members hold degrees in environmental sciences or education, and are graduates of wilderness leadership programs such as Outward Bound, NOLS, and SCA.
Our programs are located on the beautiful Copper River Delta and Prince William Sound regions of south central Alaska. The landscape provides an excellent classroom for participants (and staff) to explore the temperate rainforest, wetland, glacial, and marine ecosystems that make this area so diverse. With a student/teacher ratio of 4:1, we offer a high quality and personal learning experience for all of our participants. Students attend from Cordova and other Alaskan communities, and throughout the United States.
