The Rand Mountain Management Area spans roughly 40,000 acres of mountainous desert and encompasses the Desert Tortoise Natural Area and the Western Rand Mountains Area of Critical Environmental Concern. The Rands are located about 100 miles East of the city of Bakersfield, CA and 150 miles North of Los Angeles. The mountain range is home to a diverse variety of animals, rugged plantlife, fascinating geological features and the small and scenic "Living Ghost Town" of Randsburg, a relic from the mining boom of the 19th century. The Rand Mountain crew will be camping in and around this area from October of 2011 until May of 2012. The six-member crew will be working to restore the landscape from human impact and also educating the public on responsible recreation and minimizing damage to such a fragile and misunderstood environment.
