Crew Leader Service Learning Academy

Crew Leader – Service Learning Academy Crew

A crew leader position with Environmental Corps is an exciting National Service opportunity for members, ages 21-28. At American YouthWorks in Austin, TX, young people from across the country and various walks of life share one common goal: bettering themselves and their community. Our trail-building and habitat restoration projects require members to do physically demanding service in all types of weather. The Service Learning Academy Crew is set apart from our other crews in that the members of the crew are current high school students – completing conservation projects for part of the week and taking classes for part of the week. Crews are based out of our Austin facility, generally on an 8-5 M-F schedule. The crew may be required to participate in out of town trips of up to one week in duration in which members complete projects and class work during the day and live in a group campsite in the evenings. Crew Leaders receive training, a living stipend, an educational award, and health insurance. A term as a crew leader with American YouthWorks Environmental Corps is both a challenging and rewarding experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Duties
Crew leaders will co-lead and motivate a crew of 8 to 10 high school students to complete conservation projects on public lands and coordinate with project partners and staff. Members and leaders are expected to be able to: hike 5+ miles per day, lift heavy objects, and stand for extended periods. Time will be spent on trail-building and maintenance, habitat restoration, and public land improvements. Crew leaders facilitate and participate in day-to-day details of crew life on site, and assist with educational components and tutoring. Crew Leaders need to transport crews and materials safely in program vans and trucks. Crew leaders need to have a clean driving record and be insurable. Crew leaders should have at least 6 months experience with a Conservation Corps and/or equivalent leadership experience. Willingness to work with a diverse student population is necessary. Experience with at-risk youth preferred. American YouthWorks is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).

This position is eligible for an education award and a living stipend of up to $675 every two weeks.
